HOW TO TEST A 7-WAY TRAILER PLUG
Whether you bought a used trailer, replaced a converter, or your lights stopped working mid-trip — here's how to confirm every pin on an RV-style 7-way connector is delivering the right signal.

What Does a 7-Way Trailer Plug Control?
A 7-way trailer plug is the standard connector used on most RVs, travel trailers, and heavy-duty towables. It carries seven circuits that handle everything from brake lights to auxiliary battery power. Understanding each pin lets you diagnose faster.
#1 GROUND
White - completes the circuit for every function on the trailer
#3 LEFT TURN /BRAKE
Yellow - left turn signal and left brake light
#5 RIGHT TURN/ BRAKE
Green - right turn signaland right brake light.
#2 ELECTRIC BRAKES
Blue - signal to the brake magent from the controller
#4 12V AUXILIARY
Black - constant 12v for battery charge or interior power.
#6 TAIL / RUNNING LIGHTS
Brown - parking and side marker lights.
#6 REVERSE / BACKUP
Purple - energizes backup lights when in reverse
WIRING DIAGRAM
TRUCK SIDE VS TRAILER SIDE
The two halves of a 7-way are mirror images of each other. When you push them together, the pins line up because one face is flipped. Use the diagrams below as a reference whenever you're probing pins with a multimeter.

PIN | Wire Color | Function | Expected Voltage |
|---|---|---|---|
1 | White | Ground | 0V (reference) |
2 | Blue | Electric Brakes | 12V when brake controller engaged |
3 | Yellow | Left Turn / Brake | 12V when left signal or brake active |
4 | Black | 12V Auxiliary | 12V constant |
5 | Green | Right Turn / Brake | 12V when right signal or brake active |
6 | Brown | Tail / Running Lights | 12V when headlights/marker lights on |
7 | Purple | Reverse / Backup | 12V when vehicle in reverse |
